A Brief History of

DARWIN HINDU TEMPLE

On Friday 30 September 1988, S.Prathapan and C.D. Sharma met with Hon D.W Manzie, Minister for Lands and Housing to request a plot of land to build the temple. On 10 November 1988, the Minister wrote to S.Prathapan offering a plot of crown land for the Hindu society free of charge. The land was Lot 6985 (No44) Patterson Street Malak in the Town of Sanderson with an area of 5380 square metres. Contributions were made by local, interstate and overseas communities towards a temple fund. Special mention should be made of .S. Cuganesan who secured over $30,000 towards the cost of employing Indian sculptors to build the shrine for Lord Ganesha and also building of the small Kopuram at the entrance of the temple. S.Prathapan took over the role of project officer and managed the building of the temple.

HARMONY HALL

There is a need for a facility in the northern suburbs to hold larger community functions. We decided to build a hall, which can be used by the community. We had some money saved for this purpose. We were also lucky to get Government grant assistance again. The first stage was completed to a value of $500,000. The kitchen, office, and toilets were enclosed but the major part of the hall was left open.
